Gamepark newbie v3

   Homebrew
Sure, watching movies and playing classic computer and console games is great, but what if you're looking for something new? Well, you can install some homebrew games! Homebrew is too often ignored on the GP32 and GP2X. After all, Vektar was a homebrew game before it became the GP2X's first commercial game.

It's impossible for me to list every homebrew release (find more here), so I have chosen some of the best applications to outline here.

Airplyr by Alex is a stylish Air Hockey game. The game is highly polished and offers a myriad of options. You can play a single game or tournament. Best of all (or worst of all, if you suck like me ;), it saves your stats. Give it a try.

Blingo from Ruckage is a port of the popular online flash game called Slingo. He describes it as a cross between a slot machine and bingo. The game features very colorful graphics. Worth a try for anybody who likes the flash game.

This is an excellent piece of homebrew from Guyfawkes. It's an interpretation of the popular television show Deal or No Deal. You can choose to play either the UK or US rules. The game features voices and many other niceties. Definitely worth a try for fans of the show. And if you like it, please consider donating. ;)

This is yet another quality release from Guyfawkes. Squares is a remake of the popular (well, I suppose it's popular..) online flash game, but it's been upgraded with new features and modes, such as 2-player, in-game mp3 playback, and mouse support when using a Breakout Board (BoB). Excellent stuff.

Squares was the winner of the first ever GP2X Community competition. Congratulations, Guyfawkes!

Linux's popular mascot comes to the GP2X in this heavily Mario-inspired platformer. It's a port by scachi of the Linux version. All the graphics have been adapted to the GP2X screen, and the game runs fullspeed. It's definitely worth a try for any platformer lover.

Think of it as a deluxe version of spout. This excellent game from Vilmos takes the very simplistic and addictive gameplay of spout (fly your ship upward by eroding the landscape with your ship's exhaust) and adds gorgeous graphics and many nice features, such as in-game mp3/mod/ogg playback, multiple modes of play, replay, score saving, and multiple difficulty levels. A perfect example of how homebrew should be done.

Before becoming the first commercial game for GP2X, Vektar got its start as a very impressive homebrew game. Well, it's still just as impressive as ever. Vektar is an old-school style space shooter with nice graphics and music. And if you really like it, you might want to think about purchasing the commercial version. :)
